Lower Schuylkill River Master Plan

The future of Philadelphia’s industrial riverscape.

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Client: Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation

Size: 3,700 acres

Project status: Study completed 2013

Project team: Ground Reconsidered, NBBJ (Prime).

Ground Reconsidered led the landscape architecture component for the development of the Lower Schuylkill River District Master Plan. The study area encompassed a 3,700-acre tract of primarily industrial lands in South and Southwest Philadelphia. The team created a plan for the sustainable redevelopment of this historically significant industrial corridor along both banks of the Schuylkill River.

Ground Reconsidered spearheaded preparation of the multi-functional green stormwater infrastructure master plan. The plan meets the Philadelphia Water Department’s requirements for new development while providing necessary outdoor amenities for new businesses and for the adjacent neighborhoods. Proposals include trail connections stemming from neighborhoods along daylighted creeks, bioswales along existing and proposed roadways, and wetland creation and mitigation along the Schuylkill River’s banks.
