Biopharmeceutical Innovation Center

A dynamic gathering space for a new campus expansion.

Location: Newark, DE

Client: University of Delaware

Size: 5 acres

Project status: Construction completed 2020.

Project team: Ground Reconsidered, SmithGroupJJR (Project Prime), Bernardon Associates, Cerami Associates, A+F Engineering, Tetra Tech

Ground Reconsidered completed the landscape design for the new hub park adjacent to the Biopharmaceutical Innovations Building (BPI) on the University of Delaware’s STAR Campus. The 272-acre parcel was once home to an automobile plant which was razed in 2009, ending more than 50 years of manufacturing on the site. BPI is home to a University-led coalition of 150 companies, educational institutions, nonprofits and state agencies. The university has promoted the development as a way of helping Delaware stay at the forefront of the emerging biopharmaceutical industry, and the building and site symbolizes the future in attracting a well-trained science and technology-based workforce. The sites’ landscape elements include a central green, a vegetated bioswale, outdoor workspaces, and multiple seating areas for socializing and collaboration.
